01. true blood.
you learn something new everyday. and with the introduction of blood concept perfumes this week out of milan, we learned that blood types originated in different periods throughout history. the brand’s scents correspond to each type (and thus era). for example O, the original, is primal and earthy, with cyprus, rose hips and leather. our favorite, B harkens to foraging days with black cherry, apple, teak wood, pomegranate and vanilla. each of the scents are unisex and finish with mysteriously metallic notes. available atwww.bloodconcept.com
02. sixth sense.
a new take on the perfume house, six scents pulls together six artists and six perfumers each year to develop their own fragrances in tandem, unified by one theme. six scents series threeexplores childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. number one in the series “beau bow” by alexis mabille and rodrigo flores-roux is described as “the crisply fragrant image of a very chic and cultured french teenager who enjoys his quirks and is eager to discover the world.” and now so are we. available at www.oaknyc.com
03. the rest is history.
we’re as in love with the story behind histoire de parfums 1804 ($185), as we are the sensual scent. that year, amantine aurore lucile dupin was born in paris. she eschewed her royal status to establish herself as an auteur using a masculine pen name. a genius writer and revered in her time (as a he), george sand is the inspiration to this scent that oscillates between lush, heavy notes (clove, sandalwood, nutmeg) and silly, fem ones like tahitian gardenia and pineapple. it’s an identity shifter that only the history buffs at this brand could pull off. look for the clever half bottles out this fall. available atwww.histoiresdeparfums.com
04. make you blush.
this just in. his stubbly highness has released a new pair of scents (with a scintillating lara stone ad campaign). get your blush on with the tom ford beauty jasmin rouge eau de parfum ($475), one of the two new treats in the private blend collection (hence the price tag). hidden inside the amber decanter is sambac jasmine sepals absolute, an ingred never before used in perfume (according to ford’s camp). decadent and hedonistic, this is not the tea party jasmine you’d expect. available at www.saksfifthavenue.com
05. ode to joya.
skip the alcohol and let the oil-based joya composition no. 1 ($112) live on your skin. launched in 2004 with this signature scent, the brand has grown to include star collabos (like the new solid perfume jewelry by geoffrey young) and host the elemental showcase in new york. the hand-cast porcelain bottle with a gold-dipped wand plays on a diamond’s rough edges with organic undertones, a multiple personality that’s echoed in the smell: fresh quince, tuberose and a hint of tonka bean. available at www.joyastudio.com
06. something old something new.
if we were rewriting history, that couplet would end with “something wild and something blue,” as inspired by the new jo malone wild bluebell cologne ($110). our soon-to-be-married editor is convinced this scent embodies all things sweet and bridal. lily of the valley, persimmon and bluebells make up the scent that’s a veritable bouquet of femininity and youth (especially when layered with any of your fave jo malone scents). this is one to wear down the aisle, and not hand off to your maid of honor. available at www.jomalone.com
